Dr. Nurun Nessa Begum

Dr. Nurun Nessa Begum, MD, PhD, is a psychiatrist whose career blends scientific expertise with deep compassion for the people she serves. An Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, she has spent decades studying the human mind, supporting patients through life’s most difficult moments, and advocating for mental health awareness across communities.

Her journey began at Chittagong Medical College in Bangladesh, where she graduated with top honors and a passion for understanding the brain. That curiosity led her across the world to Japan, where she completed her PhD in molecular neuroscience under a prestigious government scholarship. Afterward, she trained in psychiatry at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in New York, a place that shaped her commitment to both clinical excellence and human-centered care.

Dr. Begum has authored research articles, contributed to academic publications, and written widely praised books on mental health, including her earlier work on psychological well-being during the COVID-19 crisis. Throughout the pandemic, she became a trusted voice for tens of thousands of Bengali-speaking viewers worldwide, offering clarity, comfort, and practical guidance on television programs and community platforms as fear and uncertainty reached their peak.

Her dedication has been recognized with awards from Time Television and Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, honoring her service during one of the most challenging periods in modern history.

Beyond the white coat, Dr. Begum is a mother, a music lover, a traveler, and someone who believes deeply in the power of empathy. She lives in Garnet Valley, Pennsylvania, with her husband and three children, and continues her mission to make mental health education accessible, relatable, and rooted in hope.
